One of the most asked questions we hear is "how safe are YJ's/TJ's?". Despite understanding there is a higher rollover risks with a Jeep than with a car or even many SUV's, there isn't a lot known by most owners/fans about how well Wranglers hold up in certain accident situations. We feel one of the best non-scientific ways of knowing is by taking a look at Wranglers that have been in an accident and finding out not only how the vehicle faired, but also and most importantly the occupants.
In this section we'll take a look at pictures and report of stories we hear about involving Wrangler accidents. Remember, this isn't scientific and some of the stories are relayed second or third-hand so before making any kind of important decisions, you may want to check the details of actual crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the US Department of Transportation.
April
2002 - I10 near Palm Springs, CA - YJ Rollover
We just happened to be driving down I10 to visit Palm Springs and noticed
a YJ on it's side on the access road that runs parallel. We stopped and the
owner and police let us take lots of pictures.
